I've been reading the collection of Letters Of J. R. R. Tolkien, there's lots of interesting meta about world building, conlanging and straight up publishing drama.
Tolkien's teaching friends were shocked at how anodyne LOTR turned out to be and how little of the author's craft ended up in the book.
> Most of my philological colleagues* are shocked at the fall of a philological into 'Trivial literature'; and anyway the cry is: 'now we know how you have been wasting your time for 20 years'.
