This was another blind thrift-store buy. I knew nothing about the cassette. I just loved the cover, paid $0.50, took it home, and hoped there was something alive inside.
Turns out Reach the Beach by The Fixx is a killer slab of 1983 new wave, funk, and synthpop.
And then I heard “One Thing Leads to Another.”
Oh, that song.
Huge hit in Canada. #1 on the RPM Top Singles chart. Still crawling out of radios more than 40 years later.
But the whole album is better than I expected. It sits somewhere between Depeche Mode and Kajagoogoo, with glistening synths on top and big fat bass underneath.
What really gets me is the atmosphere. This record FLOATS. It feels like drifting around in a hot-air balloon with some chrome robot sitting beside you, both of you staring down at the little world while the bass keeps thumping through the basket.
Good place to be.
And I paid $0.50 for the trip.
