#WordWeavers 2026.09.17 — By the end of your story, how many injuries has your MC had?I write gritty stories. I don't hide the unpleasant parts of violence, though I don't revel in it or certainly don't glorify it. Most of my MCs really get banged up. One story features a prizefighter. Imagine the pain. In another story, that same character is falling into feverish septic shock from an improperly healed leopard claw wound when she fights off an assassination attempt. Since she's somewhat OP, it nicely equalizes the situation.

The great thing about MCs getting beat to within an inch of their life is, like in all great soap operas, that I get to write hospital scenes, convalescence, extended PT (pain and torture, er…physical therapy), finally to leave them with a disability. The devil-girl (from another previous near death experience) will drag a slightly numb foot if she doesn't think about her movements and keep up her therapy; it affects her ability to fight. You think your barbarian recovering from a sword slice across muscles and tendons won't have trouble fighting after being healed? Ha! Think again!

But the prompt asks about the WIP. Bolt gets beaten up when she tries to ambush a mob coworker who beat up her friend. Lots of bruises; nothing broken. Later, she gets caught in a crossfire; her upper right thigh and hip gets splashed with daemon-fire, the pain of which stuns her and leaves her a bleeding heap on the pavement. So, injuries? Contusions and burns. That's 2.
