It needs to be said that adding support for this in Mastodon is a massive undertaking (requiring the overhaul of no less than [one entire line of code](https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/28572/commits/2d5cec52f17adda1acad8ac3395b0fa846c18f6c)) with potentially far-reaching consequences (like displaying previously broken emoji from other instances). So it’s understandable why the devs are hesitant to allow this.
