A union is fifteen times more concerned about immigrants than it is about Stephen Ogilvie’s injuries
UCU, the University and College Union, show where their sympathies lie
Dear Mr Webb
Following the events in Northern Ireland in recent days, we stand in solidarity with our members and their communities.
We condemn the monstrous attack that took place on Monday evening on Stephen Ogilvy. Our thoughts are with him and his family. The dignity shown by Stephen's family in speaking out against all forms of violence, appealing for calm and pointing out the positive role migrants play in our society is an example to us all. It is this approach we should all unite behind.
The violent disorder that followed the attack will do nothing to unite communities or move forward together.
We have seen attacks on homes, houses being set alight with families inside them, and the racist targeting of ethnic minority communities and migrants. There can never be any justification for racism, vigilantism or collective blame.
Our colleges and universities are beacons of all the benefits of diversity, internationalism and inclusion. It is this example we want to see come to the fore in the coming weeks.
We call on political leaders to be unequivocal and robust in condemning every single act of violence and racism that has taken place.
We must stand with every family under attack and show that they are not alone, not forgotten and not abandoned.
And we also know that these events will impact some of our members disproportionally and it's really important we check in on colleagues who may be fearful and anxious. There is strength in solidarity and I'd like to think our union embodies that.
Our members in Belfast, Derry and Glasgow will be gathering this Saturday for peaceful rallies against the violence and we know there are many more solidarity events planned in other areas.
We encourage our members to take part in any peaceful counter protests to show hate, division and violence have no place in our campuses or our communities.
