We also speak about the many parents who don't have this kind of rapport with their grown kids. Perhaps because they were authoritative, demeaning even abusive to their kids and that they're only getting their fair share. We're not the "respect your elders by default" kinda family X-)

It's not normal around here to treat one's kids as individuals with their own life and goals - it's common to treat them as property (until they hopefully escape), so what we have is an anomaly, and we cherish it.
