Brazil assets sell off as Lula victory reverses election bets

Brazil’s electoral court confirmed Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth presidential term with 51.79% of valid votes, defeating Flávio Bolsonaro’s 48.21%. Lula overturned a first-round deficit, catching investors positioned for a change of government.

A Hyperliquid perpetual contract referencing the U.S.-listed iShares MSCI Brazil ETF, EWZ, fell as much as 27% following the result, according to EconoTimes. Separately, CNBC reported EWZ shares down 25% in U.S. premarket trading at 7:25 a.m. Eastern. The chart depicts the derivative—not ETF ownership or Brazil’s domestic stock index—and neither reported move represents a regular-session closing loss.

The reversal follows a sharp rally built around expectations of more market-friendly policy and tighter public finances under Bolsonaro. Brazilian stocks ended Friday almost 7% above their pre-first-round levels, while the real was nearly 5% stronger, Reuters reported. November real futures subsequently fell 10% in Asian trading, adding a currency-market signal to the equity selloff.

The fiscal outlook now takes center stage. Public debt exceeds 82% of GDP, while Lula’s team targets a budget surplus before interest payments of about 1.3% of GDP by 2030. UBS’s Alejo Czerwonko told Reuters that investors want a clear, credible commitment to fiscal discipline and cooperation with an opposition-leaning Congress.

If confidence weakens, lenders could demand higher yields, increasing government financing costs and making credit more expensive for businesses and households. A weaker real could also raise import costs. For leveraged traders, the overnight move illustrates how political surprises can rapidly erode positions before the underlying cash market opens. Whether the repricing persists depends on subsequent trading and policy—not the dramatic candle alone.
