Time for a lesson on how we Somalis name our kids.
Trump’s big reveal last night was that Ilhan Omar is actually Ilhan Nur Said Elmi.
Let’s break this down.
Ilhan’s dad is NUR OMAR MOHAMMED.
Nur is his name.
Omar is his Dad name.
Mohamed is his Grandfather’s name.
ELMI IS THE FAMILY NAME. IT BELONGS TO MAYBE THE 6th or 7th Grandfather.
So when Mr. Nur had a baby girl.
He named her Ilhan.
Ilhan the daughter of NUR, the son of Omar, who’s the son of Mohammed.
Now most Somalis in America decide to follow the American way of using ONE LAST NAME.
IN THIS CASE SHE TOOK OMAR AS HER LAST NAME, HER GRANDFATHERS NAME.
This can get complicated when siblings choose to use one last name over another.
Happens in my family.
I have three names but I only use two.
My other siblings use all three, giving them two last names.
