I would say there’s two angles to this - political and military. Military people seem to hate it, political - quite the opposite.
Both have their arguments, because Zelensky’s PR stunt in Kupyansk seriously ridiculed Putin and demonstrated to both Russians and Trump that he’s not in control. Same, but on smaller scale applies to flag planting events, but you’re right that Russians use it on much larger scale and thus suffer more losses while the political gains is questionable.
