I feel it also depends on the general attitude we were brought up with, what we're used to. If we feel it's acceptable that everyone contributes to the common good (like I think many Europeans feel), then we don't see taxes as necessarily bad. But it feels like people in the US have much more of a "what's in it for me" attitude, also not seeing that common good includes good for them.
But I have to acknowledge that lower earners are often more burdened by taxes than the wealthy.
