My debit card was declined when I tried to pay. The woman in line behind me noticed and struck up a conversation. I told her I suspected my bank declined the charge because it was an international transaction--I mentioned I'm from the U.S. (I'm at the Toronto airport, by the way.)
She says "Oh, we're neighbors. Let me buy that for you."
I sort of looked down sheepishly and replied "I sure wish my country was a better neighbor." She smiled slightly in a knowing way that told me she understood.
