The other day, a Gen Z kid told me she listens to “Millennial music.”

Being a Millennial, I had to ask what the hell that meant.

“You know. Avril Lavigne and Black Eyed Peas.”

Oh no. So this is happening now.

The giant radio hits of the 2000s are hardening into one big fossil called “Millennial music.”

That’s like digging up Rick Dees and Debby Boone and telling Gen X, “Here. This defines you.”

Technically, did Gen X listen to their songs? Sure. Those records were hits.

But does Gen X really want to march into history carrying “Disco Duck”?

Because I sure as hell don’t want future children digging through the ruins of the 2000s and deciding the Black Eyed Peas were our great cultural monument.

We had The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Arctic Monkeys, and Paramore.

And if guitars weren’t your thing, fine. We had Lady Gaga and Lil Wayne. There was plenty of good filthy noise coming out of that decade.

So somebody has to correct the record before it dries in the cement.

Yes, “I Gotta Feeling” happened. We were there and we survived it. Barely.

But please do not carve it on the Millennial tombstone.
