I like to think that for educated native born English speakers it is all very logical, but then most of its speakers do not fall into that category (there are more habitual users using it as a second language, for example). Have you tried "infer" and "imply"? I used to bother to say "To infer implies a knowing subject". I also say "You lie with someone or something. You lay someone or something."
