For this song, I wanted to bring an ancient Viking Age poem to life through modern music while remaining faithful to its historical origins.
I started with Darraðarljóð, an Old Norse poem preserved in the medieval Icelandic Njáls saga. The poem describes Valkyries weaving the fate of warriors during the Battle of Clontarf in 1014.
I used AI to help study the original Old Norse text and compare historical English translations. I also researched the work of Old Norse scholar Dr. Jackson Crawford, whose interpretation helped inspire my approach to making the language understandable to modern audiences.
From there, I developed a modern English adaptation, preserving the poem's central imagery, mythology, and historical themes while adjusting the wording, rhythm, and rhyme to work as song lyrics.
The result isn't a word-for-word historical translation. It's an original musical adaptation inspired by an ancient poem.
I then transformed the lyrics into a brutal fusion of Viking metal, Nordic industrial metal, and bass-heavy hard techno, featuring crushing guitars, traditional tagelharpa, thunderous war drums, and powerful male vocal harmonies.
