People appear shocked at Trump's trade war or Ben Gvir's taunting of the floatilia arrestees, not understanding that this aggressive behavior is exactly the point.
Trump is a convicted felon. Ben Gvir is convicted in Israel of being a racist and inciting hate. He was also rejected from the IDF for his ties to extremist organizations within Israel. He has been a useful foil by Netanyahu to not only keep him in power, but to position himself as a moderate.
Isolating their nations from allies is a weapon extremists use against their own people. When everyone hates them, it furthers their narrative and strengthens their hold over the people. It's not buffoonery; it's sabotage.
In neither of these situations am I advocating tacit acceptance, but in both cases I urge people to remember that the plurality of the population is not represented by these individuals.
The US is more than Trump and Israel is more than Ben Gvir.
