Earthworm 🐌 on Nostr: Dear colleague, When policymakers act against both science and the interests of ...

Dear colleague,

When policymakers act against both science and the interests of society, scientists have the room, and the mandate, to speak up.

Some time ago we spoke for the Nature Restoration Regulation and against the misinformation surrounding it (see Open Letter on SUR and NRL) - and with 6000 signatories we supported the adoption of the NRR by the EU Parliament.

Yet meanwhile the backlash against the Green Deal has worsened, and science is being ignored.

Pesticide over-use has grave impacts on both human health and the environment, yet the Parliament is advancing a Commission proposal to “simplify” (deregulate) pesticide use through an Omnibus proposal. A large group of scientists published a critical paper in Science stating that the EU Omnibus proposal increases pesticide risks, but some member of the EU Parliament have, strikingly, proposed amendments that rather make it even worse.

Scientists from the Netherlands drafted an Open Letter to the European Parliament to request that the debate on the OMNIBUS proposal on Food and Feed Safety is paused until a rigorous and independent assessment of the proposal has been conducted, and calling for science to be taken into account.

If you would like to join as a signatory, you can find the letter here:

Could you please sign it and send it around to your colleagues?

Best regards,

Guy Peer
