Empathy, Morality, and Caregiving
Albert Camus wrote a few different books about humanity, morality, empathy, and the inequities of justice in governments. Having just finished reading The Fall by Camus, I thought about the experiences of a local parent and her daughter who lives with a serious psychiatric illness and is currently in jail. Was kicking her father in the shin during a mental health crisis, or putting her in a jail cell for four months while attorneys argued if she could be involuntarily treated the greater immorality? I think the answer is obvious. By accepting and relying on the justice system to deal with mental health crises, we validate a traumatizing and punitive approach over medical and social responses. I have lost my confidence in the ability of government agencies in Texas to contribute humane solutions. (1/6)
