Yup, been there, done that. We're super close to just blocking all card calls from Mastodon instances. It barrages our VPS with thousands of card calls in milliseconds, which in turn causes our hosting software to pause and reset; the result is the site's down for as much as 5 minutes as things reboot.
Biggest single problem with mastodon / fediverse right now, IMO. Lots of big sites are blocking fediverse card requests for same reasion.
