Aha - someone else found the problem: https://github.com/ArmDeveloperEcosystem/microphone-library-for-pico/issues/38
It seems to record voices with Linux. Using the Adafruit PDM microphone first for bird detection and if that goes OK will try changing to the other one for bats.
