On a side note, I would vastly prefer the US system over a nation like Japan. In the USA, you have a very small chance of dying by being shot. This can be controlled to a great degree with personal behaviour, such as not participating in crime. Japan has roughly one gun death per year. But their suicide rate is often higher than the US suicide and homicide rates combined. And I don't think that is as avoidable as simply not robbing people. You are safer in the USA.
