While waiting for a tram once I watched a line of pigeons sitting on top of a building and periodically one of them would fall off, not jump, fall, maybe with a bit of a horizontal push, but they'd pretty much fall mostly straight down for about half a second, then spread their wings to glide across the street at about head-height, above most of the cars, then flap and swoop back to their perch to watch the next have a go. I guessed that they were playing with thermals.
