AI can write the essay. It can’t sit in a room and defend it.That’s the problem with continuous assessment now at academic institutions.
Coursework is where students learn — wrestling with texts, reflecting, using AI as a tool. That’s good. That’s the messy, real process of growth, and students should own it. But coursework is no longer proof of learning. It’s proof of access to a tool. So institutions have to separate the two. Let AI into the learning process. Keep it out of the verification.
That means more weight on exams — written, oral, practical. In-person, not online.
The real world doesn’t hand you a blank page and a timer. But it does demand you apply knowledge under stress, and it does expose you when you don’t actually know what you claim to know.
The institution’s job isn’t to police AI. It’s to certify that the student is ready to practice. That certification has to survive contact with reality.
