In the very center of Kyiv stands an extravagant building known as the House with Chimeras.
This imposing grey Art Nouveau structure derives its name from its concrete sculptural ornaments, which feature land and aquatic wildlife, hunting motifs, and animal trophies.
Architect Władysław Horodecki built the house between 1901 and 1903 as an apartment building that also included living quarters for his own family.
Horodecki owned the "For" cement plant near Kyiv; he executed most of his projects using his own concrete, employing the decorative elements as a showcase for his product.
The animal sculptures were created by the sculptor Elio Salia. Since Horodecki was an avid hunter, the facades are adorned with elephants, giraffes, ostriches, and other animals that were among his quarry.
One of the building's rooms features stucco molding and murals themed around the ocean depths, with a ceiling decorated with seashells and starfish.
