It is a bit dense in places :-) But the diagrams try to get the intuition across!

We're focusing on _dependency resolution_ in this paper: the varying semantics package managers have for expressing dependencies.

I think Build Systems à la Carte (doi.org/10.1145/3236774) is a better model of Nix and Guix, because they focus their semantics on the building of software and leave dependency resolution to manual packaging or ecosystem specific tooling (foo2nix tools).
