I spent today writing a potted history of the thirteenth-century rebellion of the Gascons against Simon de Montfort and the events that followed it up until the Battle of Evesham. I don't think my readers truly need to know all that to read The Informant, but a lot of them might be interested or just want to know what happened after the week in 1252 that the novel covers.
This book is slowly getting there....
