I am used to "highway" for your "road" and "strode". The "limited access highways" do not have cross streets, driveways, houses or businesses on them.
In California, "freeway" is a legal term for "limited access highway" but it can be loose. Sometimes you'll be going along a freeway and then there's a sign "freeway ends in ¼ mile". The highway looks the same after a quarter mile, but now there may be cross streets and a slightly lower speed limit. A mile later "freeway begins"
