🚨🇺🇸 Hackers target Federal Election Commission, forcing filing system offline
The U.S. Federal Election Commission temporarily shut down its electronic filing system after hacking attempts disrupted the service one week before the November 3 midterm elections.
â €
The outage prevents political committees and other organizations from submitting mandatory 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports, reducing the amount of current campaign-finance information available to the public.
â €
The system has reportedly been offline since around 10 p.m. ET on October 26. FEC staff are working to restore the service, while previously filed reports remain searchable on the agency’s website.
â €
There is currently no confirmation that the attackers gained access, stole data or altered any filings. The identity and motive of those responsible also remain unknown.
â €
The FEC tracks campaign spending but does not administer elections. The incident should not affect voter registration, ballot systems or the public’s ability to vote.
