>All my words, all my beliefs, narratives & observations are created & expressed in English. I sometimes wonder how limiting & deceptive English is as a language.

Every language is limiting in certain ways and more expressive in others. Being able to recognise that takes knowing other languages which is a tough gig just to learn a life lesson but you can understand other cultures much better when you know the language it’s expressed through, things make much more sense.

And even just properly studying English will give you a lot because it’s a weird hybrid. There’s plenty of hybrids but in English you can trace classism and history through the language and then via its spread through colonisation which is somewhat unique. Like why we have beef and cow, sheep and mutton, or why we have so many “Apple” named fruits, or why we have so much Latin infused (the church when it was strongest) or Greek (enlightenment scholars).

I think it’s difficult to break through conditioning without understanding language.

Le Bon in “The Crowd” talks about how your definition of “democracy” is not that of the writer you’re reading from 4 generations ago and likely not that of the person from a different ideological background today; and he wrote that in 1895.

We think we share concepts through language, but actually we reinforce our own much more than we break down barriers for others.

As I said, language is way more important than we give it credit for.
