I quite like Mastodon. Unlike other social media that is ruled by the algorithm, I have more control to minimise ragebait. It's wonderful to follow real humans just tooting about their day and their passions.

To help keep my feed wholesome, I do a few things:

- When a boost makes me sad, I turn off reposts from the person that boosted it.
- If there's a specific hashtag causing grief, I'll mute it.
- If someone's prone to rage tooting, I may unfollow them even if I otherwise appreciate their toots.
- I make vigorous use of mute filters. I mute whole words, partial words and hashtags. I'll often hide muted words behind a warning and make a point to only expand those toots if they appear in a thread that has otherwise sparked my interest. I'll scroll past in home or lists, etc.
- If there are no keywords to easily filter, I may mute the person for 30 days and revisit later.
- I generally don't follow brands or companies.
