Vinyl had an advantage over CDs that you couldn't compress the loudness without the needle skipping. Modern CODECs let you compress the loudness without impacting the quality, so there's no real benefit to CDs over either except lack of DRM (is there still DRM on music?) and automatically having a safe backup (though CDs do degrade).
But DVDs have big advantages over most other ways of buying movies / TV shows, in that they're easy to rip (and recompress with similar quality and much smaller sizes, though they're not actually that big on modern disks) and they don't suddenly stop working when something leaves a streaming platform. And they're often really cheap. As in, all seasons of a TV show for the price of 1-2 months of a streaming service.
For computer things, I've never cared much about the media, the real issue is that it's easy to back up and will continue to work. I have a load of things on physical media that don't work with modern versions of operating systems, so things like fully self-contained emulator images are probably the thing that would be the equivalent.
