"ICE was not notified by the Yakima County Jail of Eduardo Reyes-Serrano’s release from custody, despite placing a detainer on him due to his violent criminal record.Â
Authorities in sanctuary states like Washington have refused to honor most of our detainers in the past, and instead release those criminals back in the community. ICE recognizes the vital importance of enforcing our nation’s immigration laws and has had to almost completely turn away from lodging detainers in these sanctuary jurisdictions, instead adapting to the realities on the ground and apprehending these criminal, illegal aliens as the opportunity arises. The release of these criminals by state and local jurisdictions ends up further endangering their communities and makes it that much harder for ICE to find, apprehend and remove these individuals from the United States."
