You have to really be patient. As you said "if they are legit intellectually honest" then a lot can be achieved. It isn't easy work, but most hard work is worthy work (unless its working for Jews lol). Where I'm from (Québec as you know) the default is social democratic mindset. In US schools I learned a lot about "but people can become whatever with the right education", but even my socdem type parents are like "no, this is not the case. Culture is powerful. Some people are a certain way and it is almost impossible to change." This was a big conflict for me at a time, but I've learned more what they meant by that with age. This is also why I try to build bridges with people and cultivate respectful relationship with mature people. I'm not perfect and I can sometimes lose my cool but I hope that the people who I communicate with can see through my writing that I try to be reasonable in ever changing situations. As my people in Québec, I'm very opinionated, and yes, LOUD. However, I also listen. Doesn't mean I always agree at that moment, but I do listen. Sometimes I even change my mind, lol.
