"More than 11,000 acres of ancestral homeland have returned to the Penobscot Nation in Maine.
The return marks the first phase of Wáhsehtəkʷ, a partnership with Trust for Public Land working to restore nearly 30,000 acres of Penobscot ancestral land south of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
The Nation plans to steward the landscape through habitat restoration around waterways, wildlife monitoring, hunting and gathering, and sustainable economic uses.
The larger project could eventually help create southern access to Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, although those plans remain under development.
About $12 million still needs to be raised before the remaining land can be returned. "
