In many ways it's the standard stretched NHS attitude to sickness and sick leave in general. It's verboten and people who are off sick with anything less than CANCER or SURGERY are weaklings who should just work through it for the GREATER GOOD.
I had 2 bosses who came to HE from the NHS who had some truly vile attitudes about sickness or compassionate leave. The uni policy was "manager discretion" and these managers were hardline "annual leave or nowt" "treat everyone IDENTICALLY".
