Snaps are fine. It's similar to flatpacks and other containers; they all have their pros and cons. Early on snaps were quite slow to start, but that's been fixed these days.
It's fair to say arguments against snaps these days is either about licensing - the Ubuntu-run store isn't open source - or part of a general anti-Ubuntu sentiment (mostly because they are the largest distro).
