At the beginning of the month my husband and I were looking at our finances. The biggest bills (farm ins, car ins, property tax) happen in spring and summer. We thought, whew, ok, we have a little breathing space here to maybe recuperate from All That.
Then, within two days, the blue tractor developed a big and very expensive problem in its front axle, and Husband’s truck (which is old but has only about 90,000 miles on it) developed an issue so serious that the mechanic just told us to bring it home and run it on the farm only until it dies. The smaller tractor, which Husband spent two months during the summer trying to get someone to fix, needed one more little tweak. We’ve been waiting on the mechanic to have time to do that last little thing for about a month. He’s finally here today. So maybe we’ll have ONE thing actually running?
I don’t know. We can’t cope with firewood and other farm chores without a truck. I just. Augh.
Tractor Repair Guy (picture a member of ZZ Top but in mechanic’s clothes) says “NOPE!” After poking around the thing he thought was the Last Problem, he believes there is something else wrong.

Son came over and peered underneath the mower with Husband. Son’s first girlfriend was a very mechanically-minded young lady and taught him some car/truck/tractor basics that he has expanded on greatly over the last couple of years. Husband is a forester and a woodworking Guy, not a mechanical Guy.
After some study (and a bit of pointless arguing) the offending belt was rerouted, replaced, and the mower was back in order. He got the yard done before it snapped completely.
