AMPAS Expands Festival Qualifiers for International Oscar

During a press interview at the Tokyo International Film Festival, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences chief executive Bill Kramer revealed that the organization will enlarge the roster of festivals that can act as direct qualifiers for the International Feature Film Oscar. The decision follows a series of consultations with filmmakers, festival programmers and distribution experts who have highlighted the need for a more inclusive qualification system.
The International Feature Film category has long required a film to win a qualifying award at a designated festival before it may be submitted to the Academy. This rule ensures that a film has already earned a level of critical recognition, but it also limits exposure for movies that debut at emerging or regional festivals. By expanding the list, AMPAS hopes to capture a broader spectrum of cinematic voices from around the world.
