In order to become channel peers, you need your own copy of the Bitcoin blockchain, a Lightning network implementation, and a few more bits and pieces. The Phoenix wallet is a mobile Lightning wallet with a lite or pruned node. You’re basically using their main node virtually, I guess, but their website explains it much better.
Take a look at Umbrel OS; you can build your own or buy their pre-built device, the Umbrel Home. There are other options out there for devices, but I only have experience with Umbrel.
