N.T. Wright & Michael F. Bird, Jesus and the powers: Christian political witness in an age of totalitarian terror and dysfunctional democracies, p. 99-100:
The gospel calls us to believe in Jesus Christ, to belong to the Church and to build for the kingdom. If we perform that role properly, we will walk in the way of the cross, and build â right under Caesar's nose! â things that challenge the edifices of totalitarian regimes, that show forth the beauty of God's new creation, that demonstrate that there is a different way to be human, liberated from the lusts of pleasure and power, attaining a genuine human life by conforming to the image of the Son of God. We are to be a 'kingdom of priests' and a 'royal priesthood' in a world savaged by sin, ravaged by death, distraught with despair and destroyed by despots.
Your faith is your defiance against the idols of this world. Your love is your rebellion against the powers of this evil age. Your church is not a retirement village for moralising geriatrics. Your church is supposed to be more like a boot camp for soldiers of Jesus who go out into the world wearing the full armour of God, preaching reconciliation with God, loving their neighbours, sowing good deeds in the soil of hurting hearts, and becoming the scourge of the corrupt and champion of the weak.
