There are a lot of early career engineers who get legacy code dropped in their lap and I saw it as a mission in life to help them along (I even tried writing a book on it). So many questions were batted away with "post a Minimum Working Example" or similar "you didn't ask using the right words" responses. I made it a specific point to positively address those elementary questions and possibly shame some of the regulars into being a little more compassionate (this was never going to work but I had to try it just to see).
After a while I just stopped; I couldn't justify providing free content to a commercial entity that treated their mods so poorly and were fine with having such a hostile comment section. I tried fighting against the prevailing SO culture by example, got tired of it and left.
