Today, fully 56 years after it was published, I finished reading "The Left Hand of Darkness" for the first time. It's an established great work of science fiction. Both heralded and panned for its feminist investigation of gender identity and roles (in both cases, as often happens, by feminists, as well as others), it broke new ground with its subject matter. It's also a brilliant piece of narrative prose.

I would not have been ready for it 50 years ago. Today: Thank you, Ms. Le Guin.
