If I can just present the view as an "insane" BMW owner:
TL;DR, after 6 of them (7 if you include my Oxford-built Mini Cooper,) I don't have a single horror story to report. My 128 is 13 years old. In 18 months, I've replaced brakes and shocks, replaced a windshield washer motor, and a valve cover gasket.
Most BMW owners take great care of their cars. Find one of those: no deferred maintenance, low miles--they're out there. It will serve you well for years.
