đŹđ§ Treasury confirms decision on digital pound expected by end of 2026
Conservative Party Chairman Kevin Hollinrake MP has questioned the Government over its position on introducing a Government-backed stablecoin.
Responding to a written parliamentary question, Economic Secretary to the Treasury Lucy Rigby KC MP said stablecoins are predominantly a form of private money and highlighted legislation establishing a new regulated activity for issuing certain stablecoins in the UK. She also confirmed that HM Treasury and the Bank of England are continuing to assess the case for a retail central bank digital currency, known as the digital pound, with a decision expected by the end of 2026.

The BBA is the Secretariat to the APPG on Blockchain Technologies, and is the UK's longest standing Blockchain and Cryptoassets industry body, established in 2017.
