“You will get it once you are older,” is in retrospect, the kind of intellectual shortcut that people who were confused about how to live their lives and who never grew the mental clarity and eloquence to understand why they were where they were, love to use.
Now that I’m older, I get it indeed, that your life is the compounded decisions and the efforts that you started ten or twenty years ago, and people actually get exactly the life they deserve, it just takes more than average intelligence and memory to understand the causality of the sequence of your choices:
you look around, and most people barely remember the articles and videos they consumed a few weeks ago, let alone the conversations from a few years ago, let alone their “life-changing” turning points from ten years ago.
In doubt, hang out with older people who are actually happy with their lives, it’s obvious when you look at them, they seem much younger than their age, they are surrounded by love every day, and they will actually have advice worth listening to, not the common cynical, pessimistic, and jaded view that most old people who didn’t get to experience a wholesome life rooted in freedom have.
