If I had known better, I may have trained as a materials scientist.
The more interested I get in tinkering with various fields of engineering, the more I tend to think of materials science as the universal "wildcard" of applied science, the one that slowly but surely works through any problem, making the impossible possible and then the possible convenient, creating the very stuff of which other engineers craft new wonders.
If you go deep enough, almost everything we think of as "high tech" - modern electronics and computing, robotics, aerospace tech, a lot of medical tech - is rooted in new materials and wouldn't be possible without them. And a lot of solarpunk style low-tech ideas rely on materials science too; often not new materials but clever use of well-known materials, especially rehabilitating some who had been deemed "obsolete" or relegated to a niche use when viewed through the capitalist/industrialist lens, but have more potential outside of it. It's literally everywhere.
