At the end of the '80s we had a divided Europe, risk of a nuclear war with Russia, terrorism in Northern Island, Apartheid in South Africa. And then over the next decade(s) the Berlin wall fell, the borders with Eastern Europe opened, tensions with Russia eased, a piece treaty in Ireland happened and Apartheid disappeared. We also had the hole in the ozone layer and acid rain, which we dealt with. Things can get better. We've done it before...
