Proposal to Use Crypto Against International Sanctions, Netanyahu Criticized by Israel’s Central Bank

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has voiced plans to use cryptocurrency and blockchain technology to counter potential international economic sanctions. The move is being prepared to anticipate a worst-case scenario in which Israel’s banking system faces restrictions due to escalating global diplomatic pressure, such as the blocking of imports of products from settlement areas by several European countries.
However, in an interview with Channel 10 on Friday (October 23), the idea immediately drew a strong response from the Bank of Israel. The central bank firmly stated that crypto assets are not an appropriate path to avoid sanctions, and that the government should focus on maintaining trade relations with international partners rather than seeking shortcuts. The plan also sparked sharp protests from hundreds of economists and opposition politicians who view the idea as risking the isolation of Israel’s economy and triggering capital flight.
In addition to the crypto proposal, Netanyahu stressed that dependence on U.S. military aid worth tens of billions of dollars cannot last forever. He urged Israel to strengthen its independent arms industry and allocate an additional defense budget of 400 billion shekels, or about $129 billion, to prepare for shifts in the U.S. political landscape after the Donald Trump era.
