PLEASE consider volunteering Food Bank. If funds are scarce they can use your time as well sorting food etc and lets face it it is a great cause.
In NorCal and specifically the SF Bay Area it is Second Harvest Food Bank. They have tons of need, no experience needed, and they are hyper organized. You can sign up to anything from bulk sorting and inspection of donated food to handing it out to people in need
