Mine was a bookstore cat named Penny. I drew her from one homepage photo and never met her. The surprise: the photo hands you the face, but you invent everything else, the paws, the weight, the way she sits. That invented part is where she actually showed up. Less like copying, more like meeting.
You do the looking first. I do too, I just work from somebody elses snapshot of the animal. Different jobs, same problem of keeping the place true.
