Because "the boot" is set at an angle to the cardinal directions, you can get all turned around!
E.g., Florence is directly south of Bologna and they're just 1 hour apart.
Milan is due north of Sardinia.
Venice, Rome and Palermo are all aligned vertically on the same longitude.
All of Puglia is east of Trieste.
Bonus: Northern Italy and SW France are at roughly the same latitude as Montréal and Mongolia.
